Division 1 - Maesaglas 3 v 0 Lampeter

From one week to another its sometimes unpredictable what kind of game the Blues will put up, but after last week’s poor display against lowly placed  Aberporth, then the  Lampeter game had to show more improvement, and  boy was this an improvement.

The Blues took control of the game by the scruff of the neck and hurried the Lampeter side from the very moment the ball moved off the centre spot. It was more of a team effort this week that was pleasing on the eye with every player on the Blues side putting in a hard shift which saw them deservedly win the three points from a good Lampeter whose excuses may have been that they were feeling the pinch after an extra time game in midweek.

But take nothing away from Maesglas a very good win and this without the influential Dai Cole which shows that on their day they are capable of beating any-side in the top flight and by scoring three speaks volumes too.

Maesglas were quite dominant in the opening twenty minutes and if they had managed to take their chances in front of goal the scoreline may have ended embarrassingly for Lampeter. It was Huw Meredith who had a cracker of a game was the main culprit though by wasting two very good chances.

The deserved breakthrough came on the half hour mark when a deep cross bounced in the box and onto a hand of a Lampeter defender, a shrill blast on the whistle by referee John Evans who without hesitation gave the spot kick, a tad harsh but how many times as has that happened to the Blues this term without reward !! Matthew Smith finished the penalty off in style, giving young shot stopper Ceri Thomas no chance.

The Blues were in control, who found themselves on the back foot at times, but the determined back four who were held together by the impressive Blues skipper Dafydd George who kept Luke Lovell at bay and with Richard “Charlie“ Evans and youngsters Mark James and Rhys Davies also showing composure when needed gave the platform for the rest of the side to move forward.

At the break, the Blues were positive about the second half and upped the tempo, and earned a succession of corners, and from a set play that had been rehearsed before the game paid off with a cross by Llifon Howell, his cross was met with a powerful and well taken header from Huw Meredith.
Two nil up and Lampeter looking to gamble, and started to push Dai Morgan into the forward line after playing so well at the back. By gambling, this left spaces at the back and on a couple of occasions the Blues broke clear and scored twice, but these efforts were wiped off due to some tight decisions of being caught offside.

Lampeter were starting to impose themselves for the first time in the game and the Maesglas side were dropping deeper as the game went on. Maesglas held firm, and in all reality Lampeter never really troubled the Blues as the defence held strong, Graham Keen the Blues keeper having a rather peaceful afternoon on the whole.

Aled Rees up top worked his absolute socks off and deservedly got the third goal to wrap the game up, a through ball was met by Rees who chipped the ball over the oncoming centre half and rounded the keeper to earn his goal.

A game where individually for the Blues everyone deserved a pat on the back, a special mention too for Wyn Morgan who won many a free kick and headers throughout the day and went about his job methodically , and Llifon Howell, Dazza Davies and Aled Rees the latter who never stopped running.
Frustrating comes to mind for Maesglas because it shows that they can compete, and if points against the likes of Quay, Saints and Town were won then Cardigan wouldn't be cruising to a possible league championship, but it’s never over till the fat lady sings as they say, and Lampeter will bounce back from this, they are too good a side to throw in the towel, they wasted many chances against Town the previous week and were punished for it but today they were well beaten by a Blues side who were hurting themselves from the previous week.
